A
lot of musicians shake their heads when I
start to play the guitar because I play
upside down and backwards, meaning that I
take a right-handed guitar turn it upside
down and start to play! Because of this
unique style of playing, I have had to
overcome many challenges. After four
attempts with private music instructors,
who were unable to teach a left-handed
guitarist such as myself, and who said I
would never be able to play, I became even
more determined to pursue my goal of
becoming a guitarist. I purchased various
guitar books by a well-known guitar
instructor, Mel Bay, and taught myself to
play the basic chords. While other kids
were outside playing, I would sit in my
bedroom a good part of the day playing
leads with the popular bands of the time
on my record player. Even though my
playing style is different, I have
accomplished many goals through hard work,
determination, and perseverance.
Knowing
that my style is different has not stopped
my desire to play many different types of
music. I enjoy playing and listening to
various musicians in many different genres
including blues, rock, swing, folk,
country and light jazz. I have taken basic
music courses in college as well as, basic
piano. Receiving encouragement from my
peers and fellow musician friends, I am
still in pursuit of my music career. Some
of my musical influences include Larry
Carlton, Coco Montoya, Eric Clapton, Jeff
Beck, Dave Mason, Kenny Loggins, and James
Taylor to name a few. I enjoy listening to
these artists, but I have developed my own
individual style.
I
am presently engaged in song writing and
recording of my original material at
Studio 103 in Corona, California. I am
thrilled to have "Sweet Memories" as my
debut CD. I am looking forward to many
hours in the studio in order to create my
second CD, which will be an instrumental.
I am so fortunate to be able to pursue
this dream and share it with so many
wonderful people. The support that I have
now and have had in the past is what keeps
my dream alive! To those of you who are
viewing my Web site, I thank you very
much! I hope you enjoy my music! Email me
if you get the chance, I would love to
hear from you.
Rock on, Bruce Maki
